After watching Kalki 2898 AD, I thought for half an hour how to start its review. The makers have taken almost the same amount of time for Prabhas' introductory scene. That sequence just doesn't end. Neither the comic punches are landing, nor the literal punches. Despite this, that scene keeps dragging on. Although there is no doubt that Nag Ashwin has tried to make a unique film. Nothing like it has ever been made in Indian cinema. He has not compromised on his vision in terms of visuals. That thing is visible on the screen. But the writing of the film does not match the brilliance of its visual storytelling. Therefore, despite being such an ambitious film, 'Kalki 2898 AD' ends up being a slightly better film than average. Which is a matter of great regret. Despite this, 'Kalki' proves to be Prabhas' best film after 'Baahubali'. Read below to know why and how.

'Kalki' begins with the Mahabharata where Ashwatthama is cursed to remain alive on earth until Krishna himself comes and grants him salvation. After that the story moves forward 6000 years i.e. in 2898 AD. The entire country has become a desert. Human civilization is limited to Kashi. Supreme Yaskin and his masked army run this entire world. He has a triangular building in Kashi, named Complex. Here fertile women are kept captive for a special reason. Whoever helps Yaskin, gets some units. Whoever completes 1 million units, will be sent to the complex to live in full comfort. Bhairava comes in this scene. He is a bounty hunter. He has only one purpose - to reach the complex. Suddenly something happens that a pregnant woman escapes from the complex. While searching for her, Yaskin's army, Bhairava and Ashwatthama clash with each other. I have told this story in a very simplified manner. You will not even remember this story while watching the film. Because the matter is quite widespread.

When you watch 'Kalki', you will be reminded of 'Mad Max: Fury Road', 'Star Wars', 'Dune' and Marvel films. But you will not find the same emotions in 'Kalki' as you did in these films. You will not feel connected to the film at any point. This is the biggest flaw of this film. You decide to make a film because you have a story that you want to tell the world. But this film never seems to have this objective. 'Kalki' tries to sell itself only with the help of visuals. Which is insufficient for me as a viewer. In the end, this film makes a strong attempt to redeem itself. And almost succeeds.

The first half of the film goes into the build-up, i.e. setting up the story. If we leave the interval block, then in this one and a half hour, no scene can create any emotion in you except irritation and disappointment. One after the other such things are happening, which have nothing to do with the main plot. Somewhere comedy is going on, which is not funny at all. Somewhere a love story is going on, which is not seen anywhere further. There are meaningless cameos, which are not adding even an iota of value to the story. It seems that the makers are also waiting for the interval like the audience. Because the real film starts after that.

Kalki gears up after the interval. It gets a little serious. The story starts to unfold. There is a fight sequence between Bhairava and Ashwatthama, which raises your expectations from the film. Amitabh Bachchan has played the role of Ashwatthama in the film. We haven't seen Amitabh in his Angry Young Man phase. But his amazing screen presence in this film explains why his films used to create havoc at the ticket window in the 70s-80s. People may come to watch this film in the name of Prabhas. But the real hero of Kalki is Bachchan. Amitabh has overshadowed Prabhas in this entire film. Which sounds beyond belief. That's why you should go to the theatres and watch this film.

'Kalki' comes into its full glory in the last 40-45 minutes. Then you understand what Nag Ashwin was actually trying to do. Visual storytelling at an amazing level. Amazing VFX. And amazing action. For the first time, you are completely invested in the film, glued to your seats. Proper theatre experience. This scene only strengthens your opinion about the concept of community viewing. This one scene alone makes 'Kalki' one of the greatest films in the history of Indian cinema.

Prabhas has played the role of Bhairava in the film, which has a superficial and half-baked backstory. Prabhas once again proves that he is not a good actor. But his stardom is unmatched in elevation scenes. He comes into form in the climax of the film and creates havoc. Apart from that, he is found sleepwalking in most parts of the film. His work looks good in the action sequence with Amitabh. Deepika has played the role of a girl named Sumati in the film, who escapes from the complex. She is the most important character of this film. But Deepika has no scope to perform. She looks sad in more or less every scene. Kamal Haasan has played the character of Supreme Yaskin. But he is barely seen in two-three scenes in this film. His character will be seen in a full-fledged role in the next part of 'Kalki'. The film ends with this promise.

Many actors and filmmakers from across the country have done guest roles in 'Kalki'. But none of those cameos is very important from the plot point of view. Some cameos are such that they were not needed in the film at all. And some cameos are such that even if any other actor had played this role, it would not have made much difference to the film. Basically, the actors' cameos do not add anything new or different to the film. Neither does it excite the audience. There is a scene between Rajamouli and Prabhas, in which an inside joke related to 'Bahubali' is heard. That seems funny.

Rest, 'Kalki 2898 AD' is India's strong step towards making sci-fi, futuristic and mythological cinema. When the first poster of this film was released, there was a big uproar over the VFX work. Director Nag Ashwin listened to the people. Accordingly, he made necessary improvements in the film. In such a situation, we hope that he will work on whatever feedback he is getting about this film. And will give better films in the next parts of this franchise. But to know and understand the merits and demerits of 'Kalki', you should go and watch this film yourself in the theatres. Because whatever this film is, it is a theatrical experience.
